Chief presents honors

DUNKIRK — Police Chief Dane Mumbower presented several awards at Monday’s city council meeting.
Council also agreed to appointments to the West Jay Community Center board and the Dunkirk Park board.
“We got a great group of people that work for the police department and we wanted to recognize a few of them and hand out some awards,” Mumbower said.
Receiving Chief Accommodation Awards from the Dunkirk Police Department were dispatcher Jennifer Millikan, Sgt. John Petro of the Indiana State Police Department for assisting Dunkirk police, and Redkey Chief of Police Tracy Layman and the Redkey Police Department as a whole, for their assistance following a Nov. 24 armed robbery in Dunkirk.
“We appreciate everything you guys do for the city of Dunkirk,” Dunkirk Mayor Dan Watson told Layman.
Reserve officer Brad Miller received a Top Gun Competition Award. Jeff Hopkins, Dave Johanns, Farel Wells, Donnie James and Millikan received two-year service awards, and Sally McCowan was awarded for 10 years of service. Jordan Alfrey, Donnie Miller and Maureen Miller were given attendance awards.
Council members Tom Johnson, Jesse Bivens, Judy Garr, Lisa Street and Jack Robbins agreed to reappoint Johnson, Watson and Gene Retter to the West Jay Community Center board and to appoint Eric Garringer, Lucy Morgan and Brenda Brumfield.
Members also agreed to name Oma Scruggs as president of the park board and Gene Retter as vice-president.

In other business, council members:
•Amended resolution 2014-14 to transfer $2,997.55 from schooling, telephone and travel to building materials to pay for flood damage to the furnace at Dunkirk City Building. The cost of the furnace is $4,700.
•Heard from Robbins that the house located north of West Jay Community Center has been torn down.
•Agreed to hire Marcum Maintenance to put a new roof on the Dunkirk City Pool building and do other repairs at a cost of $11,509.
•Agreed to transfer funds for the Dunkirk Police Department will pass a resolution at the January meeting.
•Voted to pay $4,138.94 for renovations to the Dunkirk Police Department.
•Heard from Kesler that all members had signed a nepotism policy.
•Agreed to pay claims 2443 to 2532 totaling $84,552,54.
