A night to be proud of (09/28/07)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

Much has been written in the paper in recent weeks regarding the value of athletics and their place in the educational process. Many maintain that the lessons learned in the extra-curricular venue are as important and long-lasting as those in the classroom. That was no more apparent than the volleyball game that took place Sept. 20 in the Jay County High School gym.

The Patriot volleyball team and coaching staff made all of us very proud. Inspired by coach Fred Medler, the girls grabbed a hold of the idea of raising money for the local cancer society with a cancer awareness game against the Wes-Del Warriors. Chuck Wallen, Wes-Del coach, a former Jay County resident and long-time friend of coach Medler, agreed to be a part of the event that saw both teams wearing pink jerseys.

Through the efforts of the girls, Wes-Del raised nearly $500 for the Delaware County Cancer Society, and the Patriots raised more than $3,700 for the Jay County Cancer Society. In addition, the girls and Shirley Dollar, representing the cancer society, held a short presentation prior to the varsity game.

The amount raised could not have been possible without the generous donation made by long-time Jay County athletic supporters Kirk and Chris Comer of Kessler's Sport Shop. Kirk and Chris donated all of the t-shirts sold and worn by the girls during the game. They continue to be strong backers of all our programs and we truly appreciate all they do for our kids and programs.

This was truly an evening that saw the finest that high school athletics has to offer.

Thanks to Fred Medler and his coaching staff, the volleyball team (especially the seniors) and the Comers for making this a very special event. We are very proud of you all.

Sincerely,

Phillip Ford,

assistant principal/

athletic director,
