A source of great pride
Editorial
The Jay County Courthouse is always a source of pride and wonder, but never more so than this time of year.
The pride is prompted by its beauty and its stature. The wonder hits you when you realize it was constructed during World War I. County leaders, probably grappling with the inherent tendency to want to do things cheaply, had the uncommon foresight to use first-rate materials and to keep the scale of the building appropriate. Our guess is they got some serious flak from taxpayers, but in the long run they've been proved wise. The county got its money's worth and more.
But this time of year all of that architectural creativity and sound construction takes a back seat to the holiday decorations.
If you didn't stop by the courthouse during Winterfest, you'd be wise to do so during the next month.
The place looks spectacular. Always impressive, it's now festive as well.
Dozens of volunteers from numerous organizations have been involved, but most of the credit goes to courthouse personnel. They're proud of their workplace, and it shows.
We're proud too. And we think you will be as well.
Stop by. You'll find it's a great way to simultaneously boost your civic spirit and your Christmas spirit. And that's not a bad two-for-one deal. - J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
