Academy wants to help (02/03/2009)
Letter to the Editor
To the editor:
The Jay School Corporation took what some may call a big leap this past year when it introduced the Freshman Academy for the class of 2012. The academy gives the freshmen an opportunity to find success as they make the adjustment to life at the high school level. This is especially important as research indicates that more students fail 9th grade than any other. Moreover, failure to grasp the basics in coursework at this level merely leads to frustration with the educational system later in the child's career.
Through additional interaction with teachers, more focused services and year-round coursework, many freshmen are finding their first year at JCHS to be a successful one. Programs have been instituted to assist those who haven't met with success. Credit intervention, rescue and recovery programs are all working to make every student's 9th grade year a successful one.
As a way of continuing the necessary parental involvement in their child's academic career, the JCHS Freshman Academy Boosters (FAB) was orgranized. The JCHS FAB is an all-volunteer effort that carries out activities that promote, provide and enhance the educational experience of the freshman class at JCHS.
One of our primary tasks is to raise funds that allow this group to have presentations from outside sources and to have field trips that offer enhanced learning opportunities.
In order to raise funds for the remainder of the year's activities, the FAB is hosting a dinner preceding the JCHS boys basketball game Feb. 20.
Proceeds go to support academy activities. Tickets must be purchased by Feb. 11 and are available from any member of the freshman class or by calling the high school at (260) 726-9306.
Please take time to support the efforts of the teachers and students in the Freshman Academy and purchase your ticket today.

To the editor:
At a time when finances are so tight for so many, it must restore our faith in the people of this community to see such a pouring out of love and kindness.
Indian nationalist and spiritual leader Mahatma Gandi once said, "Be the change that you want to see in the world." Many in our community have a keen foresight for their expectations with this display of giving for this project.
Foster Gardens will for many years provide students the gift of learning while experiencing the beauty by which God intended these great things.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the following organizations, businesses, people, and anonymous donors for their donations to the Foster Gardens Greenhouse project.
Without their generous support and help, this project would not have been possible. May God bless each and every one for their generosity.
The donors are: Coldren and Frantz Attorneys, Connie Lyons, Linda Valentine, Susan Williams and the ABS class, Jay County Fair Association, LeRoy Hart, Josh/Dee Tilly, Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association, Billy/Linda Sipe, Crossroads Federal Credit Union, Richard/Susan Hoffman SDP Manufacturing, Allan Gainsford, Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department, Gregory Retter, Gerald Kirby, William H. Hinkle, Kiwanis of Dunkirk, Pacesetter Bank, Donald/Barbara Hubbard, Fuqua Chrysler and Rock Fuqua and C. Clifford Green Excavating.
Also, Dr. Jacob Ludwick, Leo/Carol Glogas, Donna Bailey, Dunkirk Lions Club, West Jay Optimist Club, First Financial Bank, Shields Garage, St. Henry Bible Study Friends, Max/Lois Leavell, Loyal Order of Moose (Dunkirk), Roland/Marie Bruggeman, Judge Haynes PTO, William/Jan Hurst, MainSource Bank, FFA, JCHS faculty/staff, Manor Monument, Linda's Country Cuts, Debbie Huntsman, Rockwell Door Sales, Paul Scott, and Mid-States Concrete and General Construction Co.
Sincerely,
James Roberts and the LifeSkills class at Westlawn Elementary, Dunkirk
Thanks

Thanks to everyone who voted for the photo of our son Sam in the Canon/NFL photo contest. A special thank you to Jack Ronald and The Commercial Review and WPGW radio (Rob Weaver and Jeff Overholser) for making the community aware of the contest.
We were awarded second place.
The prizes were a gift certificate to the NFL Musueum Hall of Fame store, and a Canon camera and photo printer. The best prize of all was the overwhelming support from our friends, family and this community.
It was a good opportunity to see the great place this is to live, work and raise a family.
Sincerely,
Jim and Regina
