AD steps down
Habegger retiring at end of year
Ted Habegger is ready to move on to the next adventure.
The long-time Jay County High School teacher, coach and most recently administrator, turned in his letter of resignation today.
The Jay School Board is expected accept his resignation tonight.
"I think it's my time to go," said Habegger, who has worked at JCHS for 36 years, this morning. "I'm looking for some new adventures. There's a lot of things I still want to accomplish."
Habegger has served the last two years as the JCHS athletics director. He stepped into that role late in the summer of 2008, helping fill a void after then-principal Jeremy Gulley left to take the same job at Huntington North.
Then-athletics director Phil Ford took over as principal, and Habegger became the AD. He was previously a health, physical education and driver's education teacher, and was the Patriots' baseball coach for eight seasons.
"I've known Ted ... for a long time, not through athletics but through his work with special needs (students)," said Jay Schools superintendent Tim Long.
"He's just a real steady soul who cares about Jay County and the spirit of being a Patriot.
"I was so excited (when he took the athletics director job). I think it was just a great thing for the community. ... I think if everybody had a little Ted Habegger in them, the world would be a little bit of a better place."
Habegger said he enjoyed his two years as the athletics director, and thanks Long, Ford and the Jay County community for their support. He plans on continuing in his work as a driver's education teacher.
"It was just a wonderful experience that life brought my way," said Habegger, whose contract runs through June 30. "I never really thought about becoming an athletic director. I've enjoyed these two years."
Long said the search for a new assistant principal/athletics director will begin immediately. He plans on accepting applications with hopes of starting interviews in three to four weeks.[[In-content Ad]]
