AECON to do inspection of county bridges (03/21/06)

Jay County Commissioners

By By MARY ANN LEWIS-

A contract to have Jay County’s 161 bridges inspected this year and in 2008 was signed by Jay County Commissioners Monday afternoon.

Representative Mark Klosterkemper of AECON Engineers and Consultants Inc., Bloomington, presented the contract that carries a $121,090 price tag to Milo Miller Jr., Gary Theurer, and Faron Parr.

The county’s four steel bridges will receive special fracture critical inspections, Klosterkemper said.

Additionally Monday afternoon, Ralph Frazee, Jay County’s director of emergency management, said he had talked to three companies about purchasing a weather warning system for the roof of the courthouse.

“I should have something for you by next week,” he said, regarding quotes.

Earlier Monday commissioners learned from city officials that the city of Portland has no plans to purchase or install a warning siren for downtown Portland.

Commissioners then instructed Frazee to pursue the purchase of a siren.

They have expressed concerned since the warning siren located at the former Portland Fire Department building in downtown Portland has not been in operation for several years.

Also Monday afternoon, auditor Freda Corwin demonstrated the county’s new digital ortho imagery, which has been installed with the county’s geographic information system (GIS).

The aerial photos will be used with the county’s computerized GIS system and will offer more detailed pictures of the county, she explained.

The state-mandated software was purchased with a $19,600 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Commissioners also learned from Mike LeMaster, director of Jay County Community Corrections, that a state audit was recently completed of the local program and no problems were found.

In other business Monday, commissioners agreed to make Jay County Sheriff Todd Penrod purchasing agent for a radio repeater power supply system.

Penrod told commissioners the current power system, purchased in 1987, is only working at about 25 percent capacity.

He said a new power system will cost about $8,000.

“I could probably do it out of my budget,” Penrod said, “but I’d probably be short at the end of the year.”

Commissioners instructed Penrod to ask the Jay County Council for an additional appropriation for the purchase.[[In-content Ad]]
