Airport bids to be opened (6/17/04)

Project will expand taxiway

The Portland Aviation Board will open bids for phase one of the taxiway extension project at the end of the month.

Bids for the work will be opened during a special meeting on Wednesday, June 30, at 3:30 p.m., board members announced at their meeting Wednesday afternoon.

Once the bids are read, the board will pick one of the bids, then resubmit the grant application through the Federal Aviation Administration for the exact amount of funding needed for the project. Portland Municipal Airport has already been approved for up to $350,000 in grant funds through the FAA.

After the application has been approved by the FAA, the grant money should be available within three to four weeks. The grant will cover 95 percent of the design and construction costs, said Mid-States Engineering project engineer Mike Evans.

Evans expects funding will be secured and construction will begin near the end of July.

Board president Glynn Barber said the grant check will be made out to the city of Portland.

Also Wednesday, the board discussed the possibility of the proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter infringing on the airport.

Barber contacted Jay/Portland Building and Planning administrator Bill Milligan to find out the exact location of the supercenter. Milligan said there would be 1,800 feet between the back of the new Wal-Mart and the end of a north-south grass runway west of Alphabet Inc.-Portland Division.

Board members also were concerned with how the height of the new building would affect planes coming into and leaving the airport. Milligan said he didn’t know what the height would be.

“You would have to have (a) pretty big (airplane) to have a problem” with the proposed location of the new store, said Evans. “I don’t think we’ll have a problem.”

The board suggested Barber find out the height of the supercenter and make sure the distances Milligan stated were correct.

Also Wednesday, the board heard:

•Barber report that all the contracts with Miller Aviation for hangar and land leases had been signed.

•Barber has met with Portland Mayor Bruce Hosier about the airport’s 2005 budget. Barber said he didn’t yet know the exact amount of the budget.

•Barber say the construction on phase one of the taxiway extension will be suspended during the annual fly-in, which is held each year during the Tri-State Tractor and Engine Show in late August. He said he expects about 75 airplanes to attend the event this year, if the weather is good.

The next regular aviation board meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 21, at 3:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
