Aker is new city fireman (12/02/05)

Portland Board of Works

By By RACHELLE HAUGHN-

Eleven years of volunteering for the Portland Fire Department is paying off for one local man.

Chad Aker, 33, South Wayne Street, Portland, was named as the city’s newest full-time firefighter Thursday afternoon.

He was selected by the Portland Board of Works to fill a position left vacant when longtime firefighter Doug Blankenbaker retired in August. Blankenbaker now works as the assistant street and park department superintendent in Portland.

Aker joined the fire department as a volunteer, then became a first responder about three years ago. He graduated from Jay County High School in 1990, and ITT Technical Institute in 1992. He holds an associate’s degree in electronic engineering.

He and his wife of four years, Jill, have a 16-month-old daughter. Aker is the older brother of Matt Aker, the fire department’s assistant chief.

Also Thursday, the board:

•Accepted a bid by Marsh Supermarkets Inc. of Indianapolis, which owns Village Pantry, to provide gasoline and diesel fuel for city vehicles in 2006.

The cost is the pump price, minus the state gas tax. Marsh was the only company which submitted a bid.

•Accepted bids by Stoneco Inc. of Bryant and Meshberger Bros. Stone Corp. and LICA Construction Corp. of Berne to provide service and materials for improvements to city streets and alleys. No other companies submitted bids.

The board decided to accept both bids and let the city department heads decide which company to use for each project.

•Voted to adjust a Portland woman’s sewer bill.

Karla Hopkins, 232 W. McNeal St., requested the adjustment because she had a water leak. She had the problem fixed.

The adjustment will be made following the city’s policy, which is to reduce the sewer bill down to a three-month average figured prior to the leak.

•Selected a $12,662 quote from Moser Motors of Portland for a 2006 Ford F-150 pick-up truck for the city’s park department.

Bruce Hosier, mayor of Portland, said this morning the department needs a new truck because its current one has more than 100,000 miles on it and is getting expensive to repair. The department uses its truck to haul mowing equipment to the city’s parks to mow, he said.

Les Wenning Ford of Fort Recovery submitted a quote of $13,375, and Ken Kunkle Chevrolet of Portland had a quote of $15,632. The Moser quote was selected because it was the lowest, Hosier said.[[In-content Ad]]
