All is quiet at JCHS (04/20/07)
By By MARY ANN LEWIS-
Nothing happened. There was no threat.
That was the word today from Jay County High School principal Dr. Wood Barwick.
In a climate of edginess over this week's events at Virginia Tech, some residents have expressed concern about the number of police vehicles at the high school.
Barwick explained that Indiana State Police were using the wrestling room Wednesday for defensive tactics training and there were state vehicles parked near the school.
In an effort to urge students to not drink and drive on prom night, Operation Prom was conducted for students Thursday morning, again bringing several law enforcement personnel to the school.
"People saw all the police cars there and thought we were in lock down," Barwick said about the unusual number of emergency vehicles.
Meanwhile, two teaching assistants overheard two students discussing what a male student allegedly said about a threat to a teacher at the school.
"There was no threat and nothing was found. Nothing really happened. With the tragedy at Virginia Tech, everyone is being cautious," he said about security at the school.
Barwick said he received a degree from Virginia Tech where this week a student opened fire and killed 32 students before taking his own life.
Today was a day of mourning for those slain.[[In-content Ad]]
