All-Star problems noted (8/19/05)

Letters to the Editor

By To the editor:-

To the Sandy Koufax All-Star boys, ages 13-15. Thank you for all the practices, hard work, hopes and excitement for your team. We apologize for not getting to play in any tournaments.

The league board/committee kept putting off your try-outs. They didn’t think enough boys would show the interest in playing. Although 16 boys showed up, the interest problem was the board members, not the boys.

Every time we asked for contacts, tournament information, other teams, or even if and when they would host a tournament for you boys (like the other teams in our league) we received nothing — only that they didn’t know who would work concessions, even though we said we could get the help.

Jim even went to one of the home tournaments to get some contacts. He was told they were taking care of it. Still nothing came.

They knew all along we needed their help and were running out of time. Now they have closed their books. They didn’t have to write any checks for tournaments, but they did order you shirts and hats. Only because you were to play for them.

I only hope that this never happens to another team. That the league members decide if it’s really for the kids. If the kids are important enough, then all of the information should be set up and ready way before the try-outs.

The rules in our league should try to be the same as the All-Stars, so our teams have a chance to be competitive. We should have the ages of pitchers, bat weights, and birth certificates from all players (Portland, Winchester, Redkey).

All coaches should have a copy of the rules, names, ages and numbers of the kids on the other team. If we don’t know the kids and coaches, how else do we know they are playing by the same rules?

We need the older umpires with more experience, not kids barely older than ours who only want the power to be in charge.

And it would be nice to have our home league mentioned a little more than a few games in the paper, with only hits and runs mentioned. There’s more to baseball than just hits and runs.

This is the last league for many kids.

Make it a great memory.

Teresa and Jim Ainsworth
