Angel tree supporters thanked for help (02/20/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Dear Angel Tree Supporters:

Thank you for all of the help this community gives to the kids and elderly of Jay County. This year you helped more than 650 kids and more than 60 elderly to have a little nicer Christmas. Your donations and adoptions were overwhelming - so much so we were able to put extra food in our local food bank to touch others.

I would personally like to thank the workers who help make this project come together. Without your dedication and support, the Angel Tree project would have folded a couple years ago.

Thanks also for the youth groups who give of their time and energy to come and give us a special boost when our energy level is running low. To be young again! A special thanks to our new recruits. Hope to see you again in December.

Just in case the community doesn't know it, our local churches, businesses, clubs and factories all come together when the need is to benefit the community. We could not have a project so well received in other parts of the country. Be proud of our little town; we are a very caring community.

To all of you who "adopted" a child from our trees at Wal-Mart, Dollar General (your extra donations of goodies helped with stockings) and First National Bank, thanks. And for those who saw we were in need this year by all the angels left on the tree, you came through. Moser Engineering saw to that.

All that applied this year received, plus those that walked in on Friday received, not to mention our "after the paperwork was done" phone calls. Those families received. What a blessing to be able to help everyone that we can.

FCC you came through again this year. Your employees helped us with 93 families. Our elf hats off to you.

To all of you that sent money to buy extras, food and items that require a little extra, and for all of you who fed us all week (First National Bank and Tom and Rod's, you guys make our Friday), thanks.

Please continue to be proud of what this community can do and does do for those in need at the holiday season.

We hope to continue the Angel Tree project next December along with your help. I am sure there are things we can improve on. We make no deliveries, so maybe someone out there can suggest how this could be possible - especially the food for the elderly.

If you have any suggestions or comments on this project, please feel free to send a note to Angel Tree Project, P.O. Box 515, Portland, IN, 47371

650-plus thank yous,

Kay Strausburg,

Angel Tree Project

Wake up

To the editor:

It is Feb. 7 and the temperature is 8 degrees and the wind chill is 13 below zero.

Well, today my daughter had to take the New InterUrban van to Portland to the courthouse, and the guy said he would be back at 2:45 p.m. to pick her up. She waited more than an hour for the van. She had to go to city hall to call home and the nice man there let her. She was cold, wet and because of the InterUrban van not showing up, the sheriff's department brought her home.

Well, my thanks to them for being so nice.

Why do we have this transportation if they don't do what they are being paid to do? They don't mind taking your money before they leave your driveway. They got $4 to take her there and back. So they owe me $2, and this isn't the first time they have done this.

My mom in 2003 had knee surgery and they left her there at therapy and a nice doctor there took her and my sister home.

I say let the rider pay after they get picked up and at home. This way they will be there to pick up the rider. If not, they get a free ride.

On the same day, my East Jay Middle School student had to stand outside to wait for her bus at JCHS because her bus was running late. What is wrong with these people out there? Don't they have feelings for the kids?

They may be kids, but they get cold too. I bet the staff out there wouldn't stand out there as cold as it was.

I think someone needs to wake up a little bit.

Jennifer Vaughn
