FORT RECOVERY - Sometimes it's the little things.
The margin between a homecoming victory and a 4-1 start on the one hand and a homecoming loss and a 3-2 record on the other can be miniscule.
Friday night, it was a matter of two points as the Indians fell to visiting Anna in a hard-fought 29-27 loss.
It was a night that saw the Indian offense rack up 342 yards to Anna's 188, with Greg Kahlig completing 15 of 34 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns, only to see Anna head out of town with a narrow victory.
Fort Recovery drew first blood, scoring on a 9 yard run by Michael Trobridge with 8:49 on the clock. But the PAT kick failed, putting the Indians up 6-0 in the first quarter.
Then with 11:12 on the clock in the second quarter, Kahlig hit Toby Metzger with a pass good for 22 yards and the second Indian touchdown of the night. But an attempt at a 2-point conversion by Metzger came up short, making it 12-0 Fort Recovery.
Anna bounced back immediately when Mark Mattraw's kickoff was returned by Anna's Dan Stewart for a touchdown. Zach Clark's kick was good, making it 12-7.
Less than a minute later, a blocked Fort Recovery punt led to an Anna safety, providing the winning margin though the Indians still led 12-9.
Then with 4:01 on the clock, Anna's Joel Naseman found the endzone on a 1-yard run. Clark's kick failed, making it 15-12 in favor of Anna.
With the second quarter winding down, Kahlig hit Metzger again, this time for 6 yards and another touchdown. Mattraw's kick was good, to put the Indians up 19-15.
Anna came out hot in the third quarter, with Wesley Husucker hitting Clark for a 23 yard play and a touchdown. Clark's kick was good to make it 22-19 with 7:18 on the clock.
Then with 2:28 left in the quarter, Fort Recovery's Frank Thien lost the ball on a 10 yard run. Anna recovered for a touchdown. Clark's kick again was good, making it 29-19 and taking much of the wind out of the Indians' sails.
Bouncing back in the fourth quarter, Kahlig connected with Thien for a 7 yard pass for a touchdown. This time, the 2-point conversion by Metzger succeeded pulling the Indians frustratingly close to victory.
The Indians rushed for 87 yards, led by Thien with 32, Matt Braun with 24, and Trobridge with 20.
Defensively, Fort Recovery held Anna to 142 yards rushing and 46 yards passing for 188 yards of total offense.
