FORT RECOVERY - Down two games and 17-7 in the third, the Indians went on a tear.
With the match on the line, they put together a 12-2 run to tie the score and eventually took a one-point lead. They still dropped the game as Laura Gehret of the Anna Rockets took control in the final five points, but that late effort is what coach Diana Rammel wants to see from her team.
And she needs to see it "all the time," said the Fort Recovery High School volleyball coach after the 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 loss Monday. "I think I've got the best team out there and they're just not playing together. ... There's no killer instinct. I just want them to finish.
"I've got a great team. I feel like I've got a great team.
"I don't think we realize how good we are."
The Indians (5-5) showed just how good they could be with their rally in the third game.
Trailing 17-7 after a Gehret kill, Joanna Snyder got the serve back for the Indians to give the ball to Emily May. She served two points, Chesley Leuthold scored three points and Kelsey Wuebker added four with the help of two kills and a block by Anne Koesters.
The teams tied at 19, 20 and 21, and then a Kinsey Wenning kill gave Fort Recovery its first lead since 1-0.
"I told them to go out and have fun ... stop being so nervous and tense and just play," said Rammel of the late surge, which followed a timeout. "That's all I said. I only timed out for 10 seconds."
The lead was brief as Gehret responded with back-to-back kills and later finished the Tribe with her 18th of the match.
But the second half of that third game, in which the Indians outscored Anna 16-8, illustrated their ability.
Coach Karen Zumberger of the Rockets (8-4) said she was thrilled to avoid having to play another game.
"If we went to a fourth one, especially after being up (17-7), that was a huge momentum for Fort Recovery," she said. "Going into a fourth game, who knows how the girls would have responded to that.
"Right up until the middle section of the third game we really controlled it and stayed very aggressive. And then we got a little bit on our heels. ... That proves how much of a momentum game it is.
"When the game was on the line we kind of dug in. I was proud of the way they just pulled it out ..."
The Tribe made a bad habit of digging a hole in each game, trailing 5-0 in the first, 8-1 in the second and 7-1 in the third.
In the first, the Indians came back to take a short-lived lead a 7-6 and stay close most of the way only to fall as Gehret controlled the final 10 points. Fort Recovery never led in the second game, and then struggled early in the third before making its run.
"You've just got to come in every match optimistic. And I felt like they were," said Rammel. "I don't know how you go from two-and-a-half games of sludge to a half-game of what they did. It's never too late, but ... it's like we're always digging out of a hole."
Wenning had 11 kills for the Indians, but no other Tribe player had more than four. She also recorded seven blocks.
Kelsey Wuebker had 17 assists and 15 points, Nicole Pottkotter totaled 11 assists and four kills and Snyder had five blocks and four kills.
Emily May had 14 digs, Koesters totaled eight points and Chelsey Leuthold had six digs.
Gehret had four solo blocks to go along with her kills total as she led Anna.
"She's really come along. The more she plays she's getting even smarter on the hit selections," said Zumberger of Gehret. "A couple of times I thought she took a little bit off just to make a placement.
"She's a big gun. She's the go-to. It's nice, because she'll get that point for you."
Kelsie Zumberger totaled 31 assists and 10 digs, Maria Meyer had seven digs and Carrie Watkins finished with six kills.

The Indians let a game-three lead slip away as they lost 25-14, 12-25, 25-21 to Anna.
Carly Staugler had 26 assists, nine points and five digs as Fort Recovery fell to 4-5. Lauren Staugler added nine points, nine kills and three blocks, and Olivia Thien had nine kills and two blocks.
Sarah Knapke had a team-high for 10 digs, and Kendra Brunswick added five digs.[[In-content Ad]]
