Another grant given for Red Gold housing (03/07/07)
Geneva Town Council
By By JENNIFER TARTER-
GENEVA - Red Gold plans to have two new migrant housing units, totaling $1.2 million, ready for occupancy by July 1.Town clerk-treasurer Doug Milligan told council members Monday that Red Gold received an approximately $600,000 grant from Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority for one of the 18-unit housing buildings, in which the town is serving as the fiscal agent.
Red Gold also obtained approximately $600,000 through the Federal Home Loan Bank, Milligan said this morning. These federal funds were acquired by Red Gold without the town serving as the Geneva company's fiscal agent.
Prince Alexander Partners Inc. of Indianapolis was hired at the February council meeting as the architect for the state funded construction project. A pre-bid conference will be held at Red Gold on March 15, Milligan said. Bids will be due to the town hall by March 30 and opened by Milligan and Red Gold officials. The council is expected to award a construction contract at its April 3 meeting.
In other business Tuesday, Milligan told the council that the town is waiting on the results of a wage study before submitting the town's application for a $45,000 planning grant for a proposed new Geneva Fire Station. The wage study results would be submitted with the town's application to the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.
Prince Alexander has also been hired to complete the construction plans for the fire station.
Milligan said that applications can be submitted by the first day of every month.
Also Tuesday, council members encouraged Geneva Shores Apartments manger Eric Orr to move forward with combining the water meters at the apartment complex, located at 295 S. Hale St., Geneva.
Currently, each apartment has a separate water meter and the town sends individual bills to each resident in the complex. With a high turnover rate in the government subsidized apartments, bills can go unpaid and the town then sends a delinquent notice to the manager of the apartments.
If the meters were combined, the town would send one bill to the manger of the apartment.
"I am wanting to make it better for the community... get some good tenants in there," Orr told council members Monday. Orr would like to see the project completed by June.
In other business Tuesday, council members:
•Discussed a questionnaire that will be sent to all qualified voters in the Geneva. The questionnaire asks town residents to vote whether they would like a change to the residency requirements for town offices. Choices include making all three council positions at large, keep districts one and two and making the third position an at-large seat or make no change.
Currently, there are three residency districts. District one is west of U.S. 27 and north of Ind. 116; district two is east of U.S. 27 and north of Line Street and district three is south of Ind. 116 and Line Street both east and west of U.S. 27.
The questionnaire will be due to the town 30 days after it is sent out, council members decided.
•Approved an ordinance to replace four signs at the town limits on U.S. 27 (north and south), Ind. 116 (west) and Line Street (east).
The signs would read "Home of Gene Stratton-Porter" and replace the current signs that read "Birthplace of Robert E. Lee Brown". Brown was a leather worker who built saddles and other items for several famous actors, including a pair of boots for John Wayne and tap shoes for Shirley Temple.
•Appointed Geneva Marshal Rob Johnson to the Adams County Emergency Management Advisory Board. This is a new position. Council members also added that if Johnson is unable to attend the board meeting that he should send one of the town's two full-time officers in his place.
•Approved a proclamation for Severe Weather Preparedness Week which ends Saturday.
Tornado sirens in Geneva will be tested today between 7 and 7:30 p.m.
•Noted the council's April meeting will be Tuesday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m. A town meeting with Indiana Sen. David Ford and Representative Mike Ripley will be held Saturday, April 7 at 1:30 p.m. Both meetings will be held in the Geneva Town Hall.[[In-content Ad]]
