Another viewpoint on the seat belt issue (07/11/06)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

I would like to respond to a letter written to the editor by Lisa Wood.

In light of the recent tragedy in your county where two beautiful young ladies were ejected from their vehicle because they chose not to use seat belts, I think that Ms. Wood is way off base.

The issue is the fact that Ms. Wood broke the law. The officer was not ticketing Ms. Wood “strictly for her well being and safety” because she wasn’t wearing a seat belt; he was ticketing her becuase it is against the law not to wear a seat belt. In addition, the issue is not that the police officer was “arrogant (with an) authoritative attitude.” This statement only indicates that it angered Ms. Wood that she was being pulled over by the officer and ticketed for breaking the law.

It is not discrimination, nor is it a violation of the United States Constitution that automobiles owners have to wear seat belts and people who drive trucks are not required to do so.

In May 1984, our Transportation Secretary, Ms. Elizabeth Dole was alarmed to see that there were more people killed in automobile accidents that in pick up trucks and on motorcycles. Ms. Dole campaigned to make it mandatory that all drivers of automobiles use safety belts. After working with former President Regan’s administration for nearly four years, she was successful.

I feel that Ms. Wood was wrong to bring the use of tobacco, eating a diet consistently high in fats and sugars’ and having a single sexual partner into the picture as it is not a fair argument because these issues are personal choices, not laws.

It is not about the City of Portland making money on ticketing people who choose to not wear seatbelts. If you choose to not wear a seat belt, that is your choice, but it is the law and if you receive a ticket, you only have yourself to blame.

It is obvious that Ms. Wood would rather teach her young son to disobey that law that to obey it.

Swallow your pride Ms. Wood. You were clearly in the wrong.

Sandy Young
