Another way on jail expansion (8/19/03)
Editor's Mailbag
By To the editor:-
About the jail proposal: The former Ford dealership building to the north of the jail is one of the better buildings in the downtown area. It seems needlessly wasteful to pay $175,000 for it and another $20,000 (my guess) to demolish it and haul the rubble to the landfill.
Why not expand the jail to the east where the parking lot is and buy the vacant lot to the west of the jail for a parking lot?
I would be only a few steps more to the entrance. Exercise is good; saving money is good; and not destroying fine buildings is good.
