Appraisals set at South Adams
South Adams School Board
BERNE - The next step is appraisal.
South Adams School Board members unanimously approved resolutions Tuesday declaring that five properties are no longer needed for educational purposes and hiring appraisers to determine their value.
Four of the properties are related to the move of elementary and middle school classes to a new facility nearing completion adjacent to South Adams High School. The fifth is a former football field that hasn't been used by the school corporation for years.
Wells County appraisers Ray Shaw and Neil Warden will work together on joint appraisals of:
•A 26-acre piece of vacant land on Clark Street in Berne that was the site of a football field before the construction of South Adams High.
•A 10-acre piece of land in Geneva that has been used for athletic fields and wetlands education.
•The administrative office building, once the home of a music store, located on U.S. 27, which will not be needed when offices are consolidated into the new building.
•South Adams Elementary School in Berne.
•South Adams Middle School in Geneva.
After the properties have been appraised, the board will determine the process and procedure for the disposal of each tract, board attorney Jim Beitler said.
The school corporation has an inter-local agreement with the town of Geneva in connection with the wetlands property.
Beitler noted that the appraisers have experience in commercial property, which is important since the administrative offices and the two school buildings have frontage on U.S. 27 and could be sites for commercial development.
The appraisals are expected to be completed within 30 days.
Both school buildings have cleared their Phase 1 environmental inspection.
In other business, the board heard a presentation by teachers Julie Bauman, Scott Steiner, and Hazel Lautzenheiser on a pair of programs being used to boost student performance at the kindergarten level.
Powering Up and Search and Teach both focus on small group instruction to build foundational skills.
"We are seeing progress," said Bauman.
"It's very data driven and student-centered," said superintendent Cathy Egolf.[[In-content Ad]]
