Area buses to be inspected (8/5/04)

By By Jennifer [email protected]

Indiana and Ohio state police are making sure the wheels on the buses go round and round, the wipers go swish swish and the horn on buses in three local school districts go beep beep.

Successful inspections by police were recently completed on buses in the South Adams and Fort Recovery school districts. On Monday, 37 of the Jay School Corporation’s 54 buses will be inspected by the Indiana State Police.

A 54-point inspection, covering mechanical, lights, serviceability and cleanliness, will be conducted on Jay County’s 37 buses. These inspection standards are set by the Indiana State Department of Education School Bus Committee.

The remaining 17 buses, which were purchased this year and inspected in July, do not have to be examined on Monday, said Teresa Myers, coordinator of transportation for the Jay School Corporation.

Two buses in the Jay County fleet are more than 12 years old, and they are inspected twice a year — in August and January, Myers said. Buses newer than 12 years, which currently number 37 in the Jay School Corporation, are inspected annually before school begins in August.

New buses are purchased on a four-year cycle, she added.

The ISP motor carrier enforcement officers and troopers from the Redkey District will inspect a total of 625 buses in 23 school corporations in Jay, Randolph, Blackford, Delaware and Grant counties, according to information from ISP.

In the South Adams School District, all of its 23 buses passed inspection on July 29.

Several minor problems found by ISP troopers from the Fort Wayne district were corrected during the inspection by district employees, Mitch Stookey, transportation director for South Adams School District, said this morning. The minor issues included a couple of missing screws on the interior of buses, several light bulbs were replaced and a minor fuel leak was repaired.

Five of the district’s 23 buses are older than 12 years and will be checked again during the 2004-05 school year.

One new bus was added to the district’s fleet, and that bus was also inspected on July 29.

In the Fort Recovery School Corporation, all 13 buses passed inspection by two Ohio State Highway Patrol officers during the first week of July.

Transportation director and Fort Recovery Middle School principal Ted Shuttleworth said this morning each bus was thoroughly inspected for about 20 minutes.

Each bus will be checked again during the 2004-05 school year during a unannounced spot inspection by OSHP, Shuttleworth said.

No new buses were purchased this year by the corporation.

Shuttleworth added the Fort Recovery School District includes 60 square miles and 10 bus routes . A bus driver for the corporation drives an average of 37 miles a school day.[[In-content Ad]]
