Area elections scheduled (11/1/03)
Election 2003
Almost 11 months after the filing period opened for this year’s town and city elections, area voters will go to the polls on Tuesday.
Gaining the most attention in Dunkirk and Portland have been contested races for mayor.
In Dunkirk, incumbent mayor Tom Johnson, a Democrat, is facing a challenge from Republican Sam Hubbard.
In Portland, former mayor Maxine Lewis, a Democrat, and three-time Republican nominee Bruce Hosier are running for the office.
Current Portland Mayor Jim Hedges decided not to run for re-election after serving one term in office.
The Lewis-Hosier race is a rematch of a contentious race eight years ago that was won by Lewis by just 32 votes after Hosier requested a recount. Hosier also lost to Hedges in 1999.
There are several contested council races in Dunkirk and Portland.
Also conducting elections this fall are Bryant and Salamonia.
In Bryant, there are two candidates for the town’s clerk-treasurer office — Republican Michele D. Brinkerhoff and Democrat Lisa Elzey — along with four candidates (Terry Billington, Jason Elzey, Leo Kahn and Rick Elzey) for three seats on the town board.
The town board race is even more crowded in Salamonia, where eight candidates are on the ballot for the three-member board.
