Arnold wins for Cardinals (11/05/05)

Collegiate check-up

Abby Arnold picked up her first win of the season Oct. 28 as the Ball State women’s swim team clobbered Buffalo 164-79.

Arnold, a 2002 Jay County graduate, finished in first place in the 50-yard freestyle. She reached the wall in 24.86 seconds, just three hundredths in front of teammate Ashley VanOsdol.

She also swam the 100 freestyle for the Cardinals, finishing third in 54.61.

The captain also teamed with Amber Arnold, Mary Brinkoetter and Lauren Harger for second place in the 200 medley relay in 1:51.37.

Arnold finished in the top four in a couple of races as Ball State defeated Akron 184.5-111.5 Oct. 29.

Her top finish against the Zips also came in the 50 freestyle where she was third in 24.99. She added a fourth-place effort in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 1-minute, 2.22 seconds.

Jenny Gresla

The 2003 South Adams graduate racked up 81 assists as the Denison University women’s volleyball team rolled to a pair of three-game wins at the Ohio Wesleyan Quandrangular Oct. 29.

Gresla had 42 assists as Denison clobbered Case Western Reserve. She also notched five digs, three aces and one kill.

She added another 39 assists in the Big Red victory over Rose-Hulman. She added six digs and one ace.

Gresla leads Denison with 1,190 assists (12.8 per game), which is also good for third in the North Coast Athletic Conference, and 27 aces (0.29 per game) for the season. She is second on the team in digs with 336 (3.61 per game).

She also has 30 kills and eight blocks.

Kyle Weaver

The 2003 Jay County graduate and a Wabash College teammate teamed to take the top two positions in the 200-yard butterfly as the Little Giants won their season-opening dual meet Oct. 28.

Weaver and teammate Michael Belanger went one-two as Wabash topped Illinois Wesleyan 175-122. Belanger was first in the butterfly, and Weaver came in behind him with a time of 2-minutes, 23.65 seconds.

Weaver also took second place in the 50 freestyle as Wabash fell to Carthage and Lewis in a three-way meet Oct. 29. He finished the 50 freestyle in 22.86.

Joscie Kaup

The Fort Recovery graduate returned from an injury to rack up 22 digs, but the Syracuse women’s volleyball team’s winning streak stopped at 10 matches.

Kaup, who missed the Orange’s win over Villanova because of an injury, led the team in digs in her comeback Tuesday. She also had two aces, but Albany bounced back from a two-games-to-none deficit to hand the Orange it’s first loss since Oct. 8.

She also had 10 digs, two assists and an ace in a win Oct. 28 over Rutgers. She added 15 digs, two aces, two assists and one kill as the Orange topped Fordham Oct. 29.

Steph Welch

A 2002 graduate of South Adams she helped the Bluffton University women’s cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the eight-team Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships Oct. 29.

Welch finished third on the Bluffton squad and 33rd overall. She completed the 6K race in 26-minutes, 44.10 seconds.

Sara Hough

The Jay County graduate paced the Ancilla College volleyball team in digs and aces as it closed the regular season with a 28-30, 30-24, 30-21, 30-19 loss to 20th-ranked Macomb Community College.

Hough, the libero, racked up 21 digs in the defeat. She also had five aces.[[In-content Ad]]
