Art contest drawings still coming in (05/23/06)
Jay County Solid Waste District
Entries to the Jay County Solid Waste District’s recycled art contest continue to come in, and Kay Hayes, district director reminded residents that the deadline to submit those entries to the district office is noon Wednesday.
Hayes told the solid waste board, during its regular meeting Monday, that several entries have already been received and more are expected today.
The contest features any art work created from unwanted or recycled items.
The entries will be on display at the Jay County Public Library for two weeks in June, she told board members.
Winners in three categories will be announced May 31.
Additionally Monday, the board renewed a two-year contract with Waste Management to haul the district’s recycling trailers.
The cost is $240 per haul through the week, the same as it has been, Hayes said. However, if the district asks for a haul to be made on a Saturday, the cost will be increased to $280.
Also Monday, board members approved raising the mileage rate for employees to the federal rate of 44.5 cents. There has not been an increase in the current 31 cents per mile rate since the district was organized.
“We try to use the company truck most of the time,” Hayes told the board, “but there are times when we must use our own vehicles.”
The rate will apply to Hayes and Jill Cochran, administrative assistant.
Additionally, Hayes said she hopes to schedule the shredding machine sometime in August or September. A location will be determined later, she said, adding that the shredder will be available for the public’s use.
In the financial report, the district showed expenses totaling $16,719.15 in May and receipts of $16,738. There were 17,601.28 tons of solid waste delivered to the landfill, with 4,211 of those tons exempt from the district fee.
The district shows a checking account balance of $106,513.33[[In-content Ad]]
