One of the largest crowds in recent years attended the 22nd Annual Holiday Benefit Auction at Arts Place, where $15,834.50 was raised to help with our annual budget. A total of $500 of that amount will be placed in the Ernie Loy Memorial Ticket Fund, which will be used to subsidize student tickets to our performances.

A very special thanks goes to Leslie Newton and her eighth grade art class. She received a grant for a project to decorate stools to donate for the auction from The Portland Foundation. The stools were beautifully decorated and raised $762.50 for the auction.

Leslie stated: “I volunteered to get the dollars; they volunteered their time and talent; we donated the stools to support our community. We chose an arts organization because we are an art class. We feel that in turn we will benefit from the programs that Arts Place provides for us and the community. What we give comes back to us.”

We were very pleased, especially in uncertain economic times, with the spirit and generosity of the bidders. The success of the auction was attributable to many people and some we would like to recognize are:

•The numerous businesses and individuals who donated sale items, door prizes and cash.

•The many volunteers who solicited donations.

•Loy Realty and Auction, Gary Loy and staff for providing the auctioneering services.

•Peter Vogler and Faere Wyndes and the cast of “George Bailey.”

•Barb Freel and Lisa Barnett for preparing the delicious food; First National Bank for sponsoring our reception; and Tyson Mexican Original, Jay County Beverage, Monarch Beverage, Sugar ‘n Slice, Sharlette’s Fudgery & Candies, Coca-Cola Bottling Company and the Glass Bonsai for their generous donations to the refreshments.

•B&S Excursions and MainSource for their donation of a two-night stay at French Lick Springs Resort.

•Delta Theta Tau for all of their help.

•Greeters and helpers — Gretchen Young, Margie Jetter and Debi Gillespie.

•The staff of Arts Place.

•And most importantly, the wonderful crowd who attended this year’s auction. Please plan on attending next year and bringing a friend with you.

Sincerely,

Doug Loy and Cindy Denney, co-chairs; Barb Freel, food chair; and Sue Burk, regional services director, Arts Place
