Bailey sorry he was away
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
I, Fred Bailey, candidate for Portland City Council District 5, want to apologize to The CR and the voters of District 5 that I was unable to respond for candidate questioning because my wife and I were attending a granddaughter’s wedding in Arlington, Va. We extended the trip to visit Washington, D.C., and Arlington National Cemetery, thus we missed the deadline.
I just completed four years on county council, representing Portland to speak for my qualifications.
We are mandated by IDEM to eliminate storm overflow. A better plan to lower costs would be to use $5 or $6 million of cash reserves, leaving $7 to $8 million in reserve, lowering the needed bonding amount. I have second thoughts on the need for a walking path for that area. I would rather join with homeowners to share sidewalk expenses to cover the same issue.
Another concern includes the mandate at XPLEX to the tune of $250,000 to $300,000 to bring the area back to original standards. I disagree with the way TIF funds are used to refurbish the downtown area. Strings are attached and hoops to be jumped through.
Some of these problem areas can be corrected, but you must vote.
Thanks,
Fred Bailey

To the editor:
Each year, America celebrates “Make A Difference Day” on the fourth Saturday of October. Millions of volunteers helped others in their communities last Saturday, Oct. 22. Leaves were raked in neighborhood yards, homeless shelters were refurbished, parks and rivers were cleaned, playgrounds were built, and the lives of millions of people are better because people helped in their communities.
Volunteers from CrossRoads Financial Federal Credit Union held buckets at the intersection of Votaw and Meridian streets on Saturday morning collecting money for local community needs. In three hours, motorists generously donated over $1,300 for the local food bank and energy assistance. That’s an incredible increase of $250 over last year!
Whether you were someone who: gave all the change you had, had your dollars waving in your hand, drove around the block to donate in all four volunteer buckets, asked about Make A Difference Day, or perhaps had no money but waved and smiled as you drove by, we thank you.
A special thank you goes to the Portland Police Department and Officer Westlake for helping to keep us safe, to the “electric” lady who donated supplies, energy, time, and pictures, and to our anonymous gentleman donor.
Your overwhelming generosity and kind comments made our morning.
“C U at the CrossRoads” next year!
