Bayh MIA in campaign
Editorial
Where has Evan Bayh been?
Though the junior senator from Indiana is now involving himself in Brad Ellsworth’s campaign, Indiana Democrats have to wonder if it’s a case of too little, too late.
Sen. Bayh already threw his party a curve when he announced he was opting out of this year’s election because service in Congress hasn’t been as much fun as he’d like. That seriously weakened the top of the ticket.
But having decided not to run, Bayh remained disengaged from his party’s efforts to elect his successor.
Instead of offering his star power as a popular former governor, he has pretty much stayed on the sidelines.
Ellsworth, meanwhile, has struggled to gain any traction.
A “blue dog Democrat” who seems in tune ideologically with Bayh, Ellsworth probably expected help from Bayh in terms of fund-raising, strategizing, and campaigning.
But there’s been precious little of that in the intervening months, and the race now looks like it belongs to Republican Dan Coats.
Apparently, when Bayh chose to become a lame duck senator he became a lame duck politician as well. — J.R[[In-content Ad]]
