WACO, Texas — Josh Ludy and several of his teammates are hoping to be taken in the Major League Baseball draft today or Wednesday. But before they head to the pros, they still have some college goals within their reach.
Ludy, a 2008 Jay County High School graduate, and the Baylor Bears won their fourth straight elimination game Monday, topping Dallas Baptist 8-2 to take the championship as hosts of the Waco Regional in the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.
Baylor lost its opening tournament game to Oral Roberts, but came back to defeat UT-Arlington, Oral Roberts and then Dallas Baptist twice to claim the regional title.
The Bears will host Arkansas in the best-of-three Super Regional beginning Wednesday at 5 p.m. The winner will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
Ludy singled to center field to lead off Baylor’s two-run seventh inning. He later scored on a single by Lawton Langford.
The Bears trailed 1-0 to Dallas Baptist after the first inning, but took the lead for good with a three-run second. Dallas Baptist scored once in the third inning before Josh Turley and Dillon Newman shut down the Patriots the rest of the way. Baylor tallied one run in the sixth inning, two in the seventh and two in the ninth for the final margin.
Ludy, who was selected as the Big 12 Player of the Year, hit .409 with nine hits, two home runs and two doubles in the five-game regional. He scored six times and drove in five runs.
