Be glad for wheel tax (09/13/2008)

While reading the front page of The Commercial Review on Tuesday, Aug. 19 I had to chuckle about the remarks the county commissioners made about road material costs.

Instead of complaining that the taxpayers don't understand, maybe they should get their kerchiefs out of their back pockets, wipe their brows, and say, "Whew! I'm glad we have that wheel tax. What a pickle we would be in without it."

If you own a vehicle in Jay County you pay the wheel tax when you buy your license plates; the money can only be used for roads.

Jay County is one of 27 Indiana counties that have adopted the wheel tax. Indiana has 92 counties. No counties bordering Jay County have adopted this tax.
