Benefits of local learning are numerous (04/10/08)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

As I am nearing the end of my first year of college at Ivy Tech Community College, Muncie Campus, I would like to take this time to encourage students, no matter their age, to earn a college degree. Ivy Tech Community College has partnered with the John Jay Center for Learning in Portland to make it possible for students to take classes right here in Portland and Jay County. This semester, I am taking a 13-hour class schedule with only one class in Muncie. All my other classes are here in Portland at the Jay County High School or online. With gasoline being nearly $4 a gallon, it is nice not to have to travel a great distance to get a quality education.

Ivy Tech offers the Associate of Applied Science (AAS), the Associate of Science (AS), and the Associate of Arts (AA) degrees. They also offer a technical certificate program. Ivy Tech offers courses in five divisions: Business, Health Sciences, Public Services, Technology, and Liberal Arts/General Education. The class size is small, so you get to know your teacher and other classmates - which is different from being at a large college. One nice thing about Ivy Tech is that they allow students to transfer credits to a number of other colleges. Many students can earn a degree by taking most of their classes online. This allows older students with families and full time jobs a chance to get a degree. As an Ivy Tech student, you are able to complete one year of college for a little over $3,000 including books. Financial aid is offered just like at any other college.

As most of you know, the John Jay Center for Learning will be moving soon into their new home in the newly remodeled Weiler Building at the corner of Main and Meridian Streets in downtown Portland. I would like to personally thank those of you who have made a monetary contribution to this project. I would also like to thank the board of directors for making this wonderful new facility possible here in Jay County. I am looking forward to attending several of my classes in this new building. I also think it is exciting that there is a possibility of a café being located in the central part of the building. The café would be something the whole community could enjoy and not just the students who attend classes there.

I would like to thank Nancy Moser, student services advisor at John Jay, for helping me schedule my classes. She is the most encouraging person I have ever met. That is another nice thing about John Jay and Ivy Tech, you can go into the John Jay office and register for classes and even pay for classes without having to go to the main campus.

Having a community college in town has made it possible for many people to earn a degree or even dream about pursuing a higher education. With the help of John Jay my first year in college has been a success. I would encourage you to seek a degree or even just take some classes through Ivy Tech. It will make a big difference in your life and help you work your way up the corporate ladder in your place of employment.

Sincerely,

Ashley Horn
