Bid for Fort project OK'd (5/18/04)
Fort to replace water lines, improve streets
FORT RECOVERY — An $18,890 engineering bid was accepted Monday by village council members here for a project to replace some water lines and to complete street work on the village’s southwest side.
Council members hired Choice One Engineering of Sydney, Ohio to create plans for a project to replace water and sanitary sewer lines on Gwendolyn and West Center streets. The project also will create curbs and sidewalks, and the street will be resurfaced.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $400,000, Fort Recovery village administrator Randy Diller said Monday, adding he hopes the water lines will be replaced this summer.
This project is being funded with money from the village’s general fund.
In other business, Fort Recovery Police Chief Maggie Hartings reported that village resident and firefighter Justin Schoen recently approached her about becoming a part-time officer for the village after he completes police academy training later this year.
Schoen, 22, has no intentions of seeking full-time employment with the department, Hartings said.
“We could use someone part time about 10 to 15 hours a week,” Hartings said, adding that she would require Schoen to sign a one-year contract with the department.
Council members decided to allow Schoen to use the department’s equipment and a police vehicle to complete his academy training with the understanding that Schoen will work part time for the village.
Also Monday, council members:
•Heard that Councilman Doug Westgerdes will be resigning from his seat because he is moving out of town. The Monday, June 7 meeting will be the last he will attend as a council member.
Council members discussed beginning to look for candidates to interview for the position. The village council will appoints a replacement to fill the vacancy.
•Heard Fort Recovery Mayor Roger Broerman suggest the village create a sidewalk replacement program.
Diller said that he would investigate what guidelines other area villages use for their programs.
After guidelines and prices are considered, an ordinance will be created and voted on by council members.
Diller, Broerman and three council members agreed to meet Monday, May 24 to walk around the village and decide which sidewalks are in need of replacement.
•Discussed the purchase and placement of 10 street lighting poles on Harrison and West Milligan streets. Four poles will be placed in the Community Park, Diller said.
Diller is planning to collect quotes before council members approve the purchase.
•Heard Diller report that lights for the Little League baseball fields in the Community Park will be delivered this week.
Diller said that the money to purchase the lights was donated.[[In-content Ad]]
