NEW KNOXVILLE, Ohio - Locked in another MAC battle, the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team found its stride in the third quarter and held on for a 47-42 victory over the New Knoxville Rangers.
The Indians, who finished 16th in this week's Division IV voting by The Associated Press, fell behind by a point early in the second half. But they responded with a 12-1 run and never gave up the lead again.
Following Taylor Arnett's 3-pointer to give New Knoxville (7-8, 2-5 Midwest Athletic Conference) a 25-24 lead, Kinsey Wenning scored to start the Tribe run. Nicole Pottkotter scored four points during the run, and Anne Koesters capped it with a three-point play off of an assist from Joanna Snyder.
The rally pushed Fort Recovery (10-3, 4-1 MAC) to a 10-point lead. The Rangers were able to get within three twice in the final two minutes of the game, but they were turned back by a pair of Pottkotter free throws and a Kendra Brunswick hoop with 26 seconds left to seal the game.
Snyder powered the Indians, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and hitting a pair of 3-pointers for 15 points. Pottkotter added 11 points and team highs of seven rebounds and three assists.
Chelsea Leuthold and Snyder each grabbed six boards.
Morgan Reineke matched Snyder with 15 points for New Knoxville, but needed 12 more field goal attempts than her FRHS counterpart to do it. She also had 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Taylor Arnett added 11 points, and Casey Horstman had seven points and five rebounds.
Junior varsity
Fort Recovery dominated the first period and rolled to a 44-20 victory over the Rangers.
Holly Brunswick scored 12 points for the Indians, who led 10-2 after the first quarter and allowed just three points in the fourth. Kelly Nietfeld added 10 points and six rebounds.
Haley Dillon totaled 10 points and five boards for New Knoxville.
Middle School
The Indian eighth grade team ran its record to 9-1 with a 52-13 victory over New Knoxville. The seventh graders lost 36-14.
Kelsey Fiely scored 15 points for the eighth graders. Chelsea Pottkotter added 12 points, and Melissa Lochtefeld also reached double figures with 10.
Lexi Schmitz scored four points in the seventh grade game. Jackie Fullenkamp grabbed three rebounds.
