FORT RECOVERY - The Indians put on a clinic Thursday. It's title - Rebounding 101.
Seven different players grabbed at least four rebounds for the Fort Recovery girls basketball team as it owned the glass in a 68-47 blowout of the Greenville Green Wave.
The Indians (2-0) used their rebounding advantage to get a bunch of easy buckets underneath. They shot 50 percent from the field in the first half compared to just 23 percent for Greenville (1-1) in building a 36-18 halftime advantage.
Sophomore Joanna Snyder led Fort Recovery by coming off the bench to grab 11 rebounds. Abby Niekamp added nine boards, and Tiff Gaerke, who averaged a double-double last season, and Sara Fortkamp each finished with seven rebounds.
"We have a pretty good starting rotation on the boards, but when you bring in Joanna and Annie (Koesters) off the bench on the boards you really don't hurt yourself any," said FRHS coach Jeff Roessner. "That was a good effort on the boards, and it kind of made up for the fact that we turned the ball over."
Koesters totaled six rebounds, Holly Stein had five and Vicki Roessner added four.
A couple of quick hoops to open the fourth quarter pulled the Green Wave to within 13, but Fort Recovery called timeout and immediately responded with a 7-0 run to put the game away for good. Gaerke started the push with a 3-point play off an assist from Niekamp and Fortkamp came up with a steal for a score and then hit a pair of free throws.
Stein led the scoring effort for the Indians, who opened the game with a 9-2 run on the way to the 18-point halftime lead. She hit 6-of-11 from the field and made all of her four free-throw attempts for 18 points. Gaerke followed with 12 points, Fortkamp had 10 points and Roessner dished out four assists.
"We dug that big hole and we didn't rebound very well the entire game basically," said Greenville coach Tom Rettig, whose team was led by Justine Shilt and Lisa Brinley with six rebounds apiece. "There are no excuses for that. ... They're a very, very sound basketball team. I was very impressed with them."
Still, Roessner saw plenty of areas in which his team can improve, despite the 21-point win.
The coach said he was disappointed his team didn't put the Green Wave away in the second half, allowing the visitors to cut into their 18-point halftime deficit. The Indians also turned the ball over 20 times.
"This is as bad as we've been on unforced passes in a long time," said Roessner. "We knew this was going to be an ugly game. ... Defensively in the second half we didn't have the same kind of effort we did in the first half. I really felt like in the second half we gave them some things that we shouldn't have gotten.
"We're on the right track, but this wasn't quite the effort that I was looking for. I really think that defensively especially we have played at a much higher level. There's a lesson in here for us. This was a good game for us to play and it gives us some things to work on."
Macie Blinn tried to take the game on her shoulders, but the Greenville junior struggled from the field. She hit just 3-of-19 from the field, but went 8-for-8 from the foul line to share the team high of 14 points with senior Lisa Brinley.
"I think you have to let the game come to you more. And that'll come." said Rettig of Blinn. "She's playing with new teammates ... we've got three people with experience back."
