Big steps for a small community
Editorial
"It's all about relationships," a diplomat once told us.
That may be an exaggeration or over-simplification, but when it comes to international business in a global economy, personal relationships are crucial.
They can span oceans, open doors, erase confusion, and speed action.
That's why we're pleased to see Portland Mayor Bruce Hosier taking a prominent role in the delegation being led by Gov. Mitch Daniels this month to Japan and China.
Mayor Hosier has already traveled with a gubernatorial delegation to Japan in the past, using it to strengthen ties between the local community and the parent company of FCC (Indiana), one of Portland's leading corporate citizens.
This trip will reinforce those bonds and expand into China as well, where many believe Indiana has a bright future in mutually successful economic development.
The trip also serves to raise Portland's profile with the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the governor's office, and major utilities.
Significantly, though six mayors are taking part in the delegation, Portland will be the smallest city represented. Muncie, Marion, Valparaiso, Noblesville, and Logansport are sending their mayors, though the mayor of Logansport will only take part in the Japan portion of the trip.
In that sort of setting, our guess is that it will be the smallest community that attracts the most attention and makes the biggest mark.
And that's the first step toward building a meaningful relationship. - J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
