Blaine houses to tie into sewers
Portland Board of Works
Several homes along Blaine Pike will be hooked up to the city's sewer system this fall.
Members of the Portland Board of Works voted Tuesday morning to pay a local engineer for work he is doing to extend city sewer service to about six houses currently on septic systems.
Gene Amlin, who does engineering work for the city, will be paid $10,550.
After Tuesday's meeting, Bruce Hosier, mayor of Portland, said he expects the line to be installed sometime this fall.
According to city guidelines, properties located within 300 feet of a sewer line are permitted to tap into the line.
In other business, board members approved the purchase of two new cars for the Portland Police Department.
Two 2010 Chevrolet Impalas will be purchased from Ken Kunkle Chevrolet, Portland, at a total cost of $37,550. This price reflects a trade-in value of $3,400 for one 2006 Chevy Impala.
Another high-mileage 2006 Impala will be given to the Portland Fire Department to drive to make inspections. Hosier said the fire department makes about 100 inspections per year, and currently drives a rescue truck or grass rig.
The 2006 Impalas are being replaced because they have been driven about 100,000 miles.
The city also received quotes for 2010 Ford Crown Victorias from Les Wenning Motors Inc., Fort Recovery, and Moser Motors, Berne. Wenning quoted $39,100. This price reflects a trade-in value of $3,100. Moser gave a price estimate of $39,000, which reflects a trade-in value of $3,439. Each quote is for two vehicles.
Also Tuesday, board members:
•Voted to pay an electric bill for the lift station at Blaine Pike and county road 150 South.
The three-month bill from Jay County REMC was for $439.84. About three months ago, the city took over ownership of the lift station and sewer line that was installed for the POET Biorefining-Portland.
•Learned that they will be reviewing several sewer tap-in request during their next meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. in the mayor's office.
Several residents of county roads 150 South and 100 North were notified by the Jay County Health Department that they are required to tap into the sewer lines near their homes.
The line near county road 100 North was installed to connect Portland Municipal Airport to the city's sewer system.[[In-content Ad]]
