Bleacher replacement considered (6/2/04)
Park board discusses concrete bleachers at junior league diamonds
Future projects, including replacing bleachers at Weiler-Wilson Park, were discussed at Tuesday’s Portland Park Board meeting.
The first suggestion for a future project was made by street and park department superintendent Jeff Harker. He recommended the board consider replacing the bleachers at the largest Portland Junior League baseball diamond, located in Weiler-Wilson Park.
He said the cement blocks which the bleachers are made of are deteriorating. Some of the blocks need to be patched or replaced. The area underneath the seating is currently being used for storage.
Street and park department assistant superintendent Randy Mann suggested the bleachers be torn down and replaced with aluminum bleachers.
“Those (bleachers) were built when my dad was on the city council,” board president Neil Medler added.
Medler said the bleachers could be used as long as they continued to be patched, functional and safe.
The board voted Tuesday night to accept a $4,200 bid to replace the chain link fence around the kiddie play area at Haynes Park. The board selected Gabbard Fencing of Ridgeville, which had the lowest of all the bids.
In other business, Portland Pool manager Jennifer Rathbun said the pool had a successful opening weekend. The pool was open on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. On Saturday, 50 people were admitted to the pool. Sixty people came on Monday.
Rathbun said only a few came to the pool on Sunday, and it was closed early because of the weather.
Harker said the new pool-side furniture has arrived. The 16 lounge chairs, three umbrellas and three bases were used over the Memorial Day weekend.
Coca-Cola Company has agreed to provide vending machines for the pool. The company which provided the snack machines last summer, however, has gone out of business. Harker said he would contact J and J vending officials, who he has seen visit local merchants.
Also Tuesday, Harker said a water line in Haynes Park broke on Friday. Until the line can be repaired, which will take eight hours to fix, portable toilets were taken to the park. Harker is hoping to have the line repaired sometime today.
Also Tuesday, the board heard:
•The two steel doors ordered to replace the restroom doors at Milton Miller Park, are not in yet. The cost of the doors is $400.
•A land and water conservation grant application through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources was submitted Tuesday afternoon.
The $400,000 grant is planned for the property located at 509 S. Wayne St., which was donated to the city by Hy-Line North American LLC. The property is located along the west side of the planned Hudson Family Park, which is currently under development.
The board should know by the end of the year if the grant request is approved.[[In-content Ad]]
