DELPHOS, Ohio — An 80-yard kickoff return must result in points. When it doesn’t, the outcome is almost inevitable.

Fort Recovery was trailing 14-0 when Tyler Wuebker gave the Indians just that opportunity Saturday night, returning a second-quarter kickoff all the way to the opposition’s 12-yard line.

From there the Tribe went backward three yards, tossed an interception on a fake field goal and never got that close to the end zone again in a 41-0 loss to the Delphos St. Johns Blue Jays.

Fort Recovery managed just 94 yards of total offense. St. Johns racked up 358 yards, including four touchdowns of 40-plus yards.

“It’s pretty obvious (those statistics aren’t going to get the job done),” said Indian coach Mark Fenik after his team dropped to 1-5. “We knew going into it that we were down quite a few players and that the odds were against us. What we tried to do was come out and run the ball, and the problem is when you run the ball you’ve got to get first downs and we didn’t really achieve that very well.”

Fort Recovery managed just four first downs in the contest, with three of those coming in the first half.

The Blue Jays (4-2) got just one score in the first quarter, a 52-yard punt return by Cory Kundert. However, they got rolling in the second period.

St. Johns intercepted a Mark Willmann pass, and John Clark ran the ball in 13 yards for a touchdown on the first play after the pick. When the Indians failed to score after Wuebker’s long kick return, the Blue Jays took control.

Already leading 14-0, Matt Shumaker took care of their second one-play drive of the game, running 65-yards for a touchdown in 4:34 left in the first half. After forcing Fort Recovery to punt again — Shawn Stein punted eight times in the game — St. Johns went on a 2-play scoring drive.

Clark started with a 13-yard run to the right, and then Shumaker busted through the left side for a 45-yard score.

Adam Bockey reached the end zone on a 1-yard run in the third quarter, and Andrew DeWitt put up the Blue Jays’ fourth big-play score with a 70-yard, fourth-quarter run right up the gut of the Indians’ defense.

“It was nice to get some big plays offensively, defensively and on special teams,” said St. Johns coach Todd Schulte. “It gives confidence to us in all three facets of the game. We did what we wanted to do.”

Shumaker had his way with the Indians on the ground, carrying 12 times for 189 yards. DeWitt ran five times for 91 yards, all in the second half, and Clark had six carries for 43 yards as the Blue Jays got 93 percent of their yardage on the ground.

Greg Faller was the top threat for the Indians, running 10 times for 38 yards. He also caught one pass for nine yards.

Michael Trobridge ran seven times for 18 yards, and Matt Tobe had eight rushes for 13 yards.

Willmann competed 3-of-8 passes for 28 yards and was intercepted twice.

“They’re a very good football team,” said Fenik, whose team continues to deal with injury problems. “I think we can compete with teams like that when we have everybody ready, but we didn’t have that tonight.

“The good thing is we didn’t get anyone else hurt. Hopefully we can come back and play a better game at home next week.”[[In-content Ad]]
