Board votes to remove Hill

Jay School Board

The Jay School Board made it official Monday night.

With no discussion, the board approved removing Shane Hill from the head football coaching position at Jay County High School, assigning him to other extracurricular duties.

The action came on a 6-0 vote with board member Mike Masters absent and was included in the board's consent agenda along with more than a dozen other items.

Hill has a career record of 39-48 in eight seasons at JCHS with one sectional title and three Olympic Athletic Conference championships. The 2009 squad finished 2-8 and lost its last seven games.

The Commercial Review first reported his pending ouster as head coach in October.

Board members also gave approval to borrow up to $1 million for cash flow needs in the first half of 2010 and heard a report from business director Brad DeRome on school finances for the coming year.

DeRome said the 2009 school corporation budget had finally been approved by the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance with a tax rate of $1.18 per $100 assessed valuation. That's down 39 cents from 2008, reflecting the shift of the general fund to state revenue sources rather than property taxes.

He cited two areas of uncertainty in school finances. One is percentage of property taxes actually collected this fall, and the other is the state's fiscal pinch, which could reduce or delay some funding.

Superintendent Tim Long told the board longtime teacher Dan Orr had been honored this month with a Star of Character award by the student council at JCHS.

Orr is a veteran of both the Marine Corps and the Peace Corps.

Long also said he will be returning to China in early December on a project primarily funded by the Chinese government. A group of Chinese educators will be visiting Jay County in February as part of an on-going exchange program.

In other business, the board:

•Indicated it would review student cell phone policy after concerns were raised by parent Brian Owen.

•Reviewed the curriculum guide for JCHS for next year, noting that 190 courses will be offered.

•Learned superintendent of public instruction Tony Bennett will be visiting Jay Schools in January.

•Examined a proposed 2010-2011 school calendar that Long will be taking to the Jay Classroom Teachers Association for discussion.

•Authorized the sale of a 1988 GMC pick-up truck by sealed bids. The truck has more than 120,000 miles on it and is valued at less than $5,000.

•Agreed to an arrangement with First Bank of Berne for advertising on the electronic scorer's table in the JCHS gym for $1,000 a year for the next three years.

•Accepted a donation of $5,040 from Saint-Gobain Containers for the athletic department at West Jay Middle School.

•Hired Catrina Diane Romero as a part-time media information instructional assistant at East Jay Middle School.

•Accepted the resignation of Jason Robbins from the technology department and the retirement resignation of Dwain Michael from the JCHS science department.

•Approved leaves for Natalie Corcoran and Steve Marsh.

•Authorized field trips by the German classes, the Jay County Marching Patriots, and FFA and bus use requests by the Girl Scouts and the Jay Community Center.

•Approved Shelly King as assistant swim coach at East Jay, Bill Saxman as sixth grade boys basketball coach at East Jay, Chad Somers as assistant wrestling coach at East Jay, Denise Selvey as assistant sixth grade cheer coach at West Jay, Tom Ferguson as assistant baseball coach at JCHS, and Andy Pfeifer as assistant wrestling coach at JCHS.[[In-content Ad]]
