Bridge firm hired (03/11/08)
Jay County Commissioners
Jay County Commissioners hired AECON Monday to perform repair work on a bridge over the Little Salamonie River, southwest of Portland.
The project, which is not to exceed $10,800 in cost, is on a bridge on Boundary Pike between county roads 300 South and 400 South.
Commissioners discussed workmen's compensation insurance Monday afternoon with Bob Brown of Barnum and Brown Insurance, Dunkirk.
Rates are based upon payroll and job classifications, and commissioners questioned figures from a recent audit on behalf of the Indiana Public Employees Program
Brown noted significant jumps in the payroll for highway department workers, JEMS employees, and county police, which are the three highest workmen's compensation premium areas because of the risks involved.
At the commissioners' request, Brown will re-visit the numbers to see how individual employees in those departments have been classified.
"Let's do some more investigating here," said commissioner Gary Theurer. "Not all these numbers make sense."
In other business, county engineer Dan Watson said he hopes quotes for paving a parking lot for courthouse employees on West Walnut Street will come in below $15,000.
The lot was the former site of a dilapidated building in the 100 block of the street that was purchased by the county and razed.
