Bridge relocation moves forward (02/28/06)
Jay County Commissioners
By By MARY ANN LEWIS-
A project to connect Weiler-Wilson Park and the Hudson Family Park on Portland’s southeast side with a foot bridge, should get underway this summer, according to Jay County Engineer, Dan Watson.
Jay County Commissioners Monday agreed to hire the civil engineering firm of Butler, Fairman, and Seufert to do the engineering work on moving an iron truss bridge from its current location in Knox Township to a spot over the Salamonie River near Portland Pool.
The engineering firm will now submit its cost estimates to commissioners for their approval.
Bridge No. 129, which is on West Division Road between Ind. 1 and county road 850 West in Knox Township, has been closed to truck traffic for several years, and was closed to all traffic on Feb. 1. It currently spans Brooks Creek.
The city of Portland has been awarded $339,000 in grants from the Department of Transportation for the reconstruction project.
Also Monday afternoon, commissioners Milo Miller Jr., Gary Theurer, and Faron Parr heard Jay County Emergency Management director, Ralph Frazee, give an update on reimbursement funds Jay County communities have received from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) following the ice and snow storms and subsequent flooding that followed in December, 2004, and January, 2005.
Frazee emphasized that the figures he presented to commissioners were not the final totals, as local government officials continue to deal with the federal government’s assistance program.
“I want to make sure each community sees these figures,” he said about the most recent report. “Even though this is hard data, it may not be real.”[[In-content Ad]]
