Brunswick powers Tribe in MAC meet (05/17/08)
FRHS track
VERSAILLES, Ohio - Holly Brunswick was the star of the show for the Indians.
Just three Fort Recovery High School athletes managed to crack the top five at the Midwest Athletic Conference Championships Friday evening, but Brunswick did it in three events.
The freshman scored nearly half of the Tribe girls track team's 40.5 points by herself for an eighth-place finish. It was 4.5 points behind seventh-place New Bremen and 6.5 ahead of ninth-place St. Henry while Versailles won easily with 151 points.
Fort Recovery's were last with just 6.5 points, all of which came from Matt Vagedes.
New Knoxville was 7.5 ahead of the Indians in ninth place while New Bremen won with 127.
Brunswick had her best effort in the long jump, finishing as the runner-up at 15 feet, 4¼ inches. She was third in both the 100 hurdles (16.83) and the high jump (5 feet even).
Vagedes was the only Indian boy to finish in the top eight of any event. He finished third in the state in the pole vault last season, but tied for fourth in the MAC Friday at 12 feet, 6 inches.
Anne Koesters was fifth in the discus for the FRHS girls wth a toss of 105 feet, 9 inches. She also launches the shot put 31 feet, 10¾ inches for sixth place.
Tina Roessner was sixth in the 3,200 run in 12:28.7 and seventh in the 1,600 run with a time of 5:37.34.
Amber Heitkamp took fifth in the 300 hurdles in 52.07. Beth Muhlenkamp tied for seventh in the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches.
Junior high
COLDWATER, Ohio - The Indians were all about the high jump as Becca Tobe and Aaron Vagedes each turned in victories.
Tobe led Fort Recovery's girls team to a fifth-place finish in the MAC meet Thursday with 59 points. They were 21 behind fourth-place New Bremen and 19.5 ahead of sixth place Marion Local while Minster won easily at 154.5
The Tribe boys were eighth with 24 points, four ahead of ninth-place St. henry and eight behind sixth-place St. John's and Marion Local. New Bremen was first with 132 points.
Tobe and Haley Burtch of Parkway were the only athletes to clear the high jump bar at 4 feet, 8 inches with Tobe winning the event on a tiebreaker.
Aaron Vagedes dominated the boys high jump as he cleared the bar at 5 feet, 8 inches.
The second- and third-place finishers each had to settle for 5 feet, 2 inches.
He also took second-place in the 400-meter dash in 57.23 seconds.
Kylie Kahlig added three top-five efforts for the FRMS girls. She was the runner-up in both the shot put (31 feet, 8¼ inches) and the 400 dash (1:06.3), and placed fourth in the 200 dash in 30.09.
Mikayla Westgerdes finished second in the discus with a toss of 87 feet, 5 inches, and Olivia Schwieterman was fourth in the 100 hurdles at 17.77.
