Brunswick, Roessner finish as runners-up (05/27/08)

FRHS track

MINSTER, Ohio - Holly Brunswick was already on her way to Dayton in two events. She and Tina Roessner each advanced again Saturday with runner-up efforts.

Both will have a chance at reaching the state meet as regional competition begins today at 4 p.m. at Perc Welcome Stadium in Dayton.

Brunswick picked up her third regional berth for the Fort Recovery High School girls track team with a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Roessner was the runner-up in the 3,200 run at the Division III district meet at Minster as the pair pushed the Indians to a fifth-place finish in the 17-team field.

FRHS totaled 55.5 points at the two-day meet, finishing 3.5 behind Delphos Jefferson and 7.5 ahead of Parkway. The host Wildcats ran away with the victory with 128 points, and Marion Local was second at 72.

The Tribe boys did not finish in the top eight in any event, finishing the meet scoreless. Minster also won the boys competition with 99.5 points, just 2.5 ahead of New Bremen.

Brunswick, who finished first in the high jump and fourth in the long jump Thursday, turned in another impressive effort in the 100 hurdles. After earning the No. 2 qualifying spot, she went on to finish second in 16.66 seconds behind Marian Bevington of Parkway. Bevington finished fourth in the state in the event last season.

She is tied for the No. 3 seed in the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches for the regional meet, where the top four competitors in each event will advance to the OHSAA Track and Field State Finals. She is the No. 6 seed in the long jump and the No. 9 seed in the 100 hurdles.

Roessner took a dramatic step forward from a week earlier when she was sixth in the 3,200 run at the Midwest Athletic Conference meet. She was more than 30 seconds faster in the district race, finishing less than six seconds behind Minster's Lei Bornhorst in 11:57.93.

She is seeded third in the regional behind only Lei Bornhorst and Lauren Dehan of Cincinnati Madeira (11:48.22).

At the MAC meet, Roessner was more than 45 seconds behind Bornhorst, 25 back of Erin Calvelage of St. John's and 14 slower than Minster's Averie Bornhorst. In Saturday's race Averie Bornhorst was 10 seconds behind Roessner in third, and Calvelage was nearly 30 seconds behind her in fourth.

Also qualifying for the regional Thursday were Anne Koesters in the shot put and the team of Roessner, Alexis Sutter, Abby Huelskamp and Abby Sudhoff in the 4x800 relay. Koesters is the No. 10 seed in the shot put, and the Indians are the No. 14 seed in the 4x800 relay.

Amber Heitkamp, an alternate on the 4x800 team, fell on spot short of a regional berth in the 300 hurdles. She placed fifth in 51.56, 1.09 seconds behind Minster's Stacey Sherman.

Sutter added a seventh-place effort in the 1,600 run in 5:7.16.[[In-content Ad]]
