COLUMBUS, Ohio - Holly Brunswick has been cruising over the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches all season. On Friday, that consistency helped earn her a state medal.

Brunswick, a Fort Recovery High School junior, finished tied for eighth place in the high jump Friday at the OHSAA Division III Track and Field State Finals at Ohio State University. She also earned Academic All-Ohio honors, an honor given to sophomore, junior and senior state qualifiers who have a 3.5 or higher grade point average, from the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches.

"It felt good," said Brunswick, a first-time state qualifier this year. "It was a very satisfying feeling. It was an honor to be standing with the best of the best in our division."

Brunswick cruised over the bar on her first attempt at the opening height of 5 feet. She did the same at 5 feet, 2 inches as the field was whittled down to 11.

She came close twice at 5 feet, 4 inches, but missed on all three attempts leaving her as one of four athletes at 5 feet, 2 inches. But her two clean jumps to open the day gave her an edge in the tiebreaker, putting her in eighth place along with Russia freshman Bethany York.

"We were really proud of Holly's performance today," said FRHS assistant coach Mindy Bubp. "She did a terrific job. We were really excited. We can not say enough good things about her right now."

Jordan Moxley of Maplewood won the high jump title at 5 feet, 7 inches, and Ansonia's Ariel Edwards was second by an inch.

Brunswick's state medal caps a season in which she won Midwest Athletic Conference titles in the high jump and long jump. She was also a regional qualifier in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles.

She said she hopes to follow a similar path and earn a return trip to the state finals for her senior season.

"I liked it a lot," said Brunswick. "I liked the atmosphere.

"I'm looking forward to going back next year. Hopefully I can get there, and hopefully I can go in more than one event. That's what I'm working for next year."[[In-content Ad]]
