Bud backing Bill Davis (3/12/04)
GOP candidate supporting his opponent
There will be two names on the ballot in the Republican primary for District 33 state representative, but one of the candidate’s doesn’t want your vote.
Noel “Bud” Carpenter, Winchester, said Thursday he’s withdrawing from the race and supports Bill Davis, Portland, as the GOP candidate to face incumbent Democrat Ron Liggett, Redkey, in the fall.
“We’re looking for a strong candidate,” Carpenter said. “We need to win Jay County ... I think Bill Davis is an excellent candidate. Indiana needs a new direction, and I believe Bill can lead us there.”
Carpenter, who is Randolph County assessor, ran for the House District 33 seat in 2000. He said he attempted to formally withdraw from the primary ballot after speaking with Davis, but his faxed notice of withdrawal was not recognized by the state. “Unfortunately, my withdrawal papers failed to reach Indianapolis on time, and my name remains on the May primary ballot,” he said.
Davis, owner and president of Limestone Products Inc., Portland, thanked Carpenter for his support. “I want to tell people how much I appreciate what Bud’s doing,” he said Thursday afternoon. “He’s given me a lot of help.”
A past president of the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce, Davis was also one of the founders of Jay County Development Corporation. A volunteer fireman in Portland for 14 years, he has served on the board of the Jay County Boys Club and the council of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Portland. He currently serves on the board of trustees of Jay County Hospital.[[In-content Ad]]
