Bullard hired as Portland cop (2/3/05)

Will replace Ridenour

By By Rachelle Haughn-

The Portland Board of Works chose a new full-time Portland police officer this morning.

Jeremy Bullard, 33, 916 W. Main St., Portland, has been a reserve officer and a dispatcher for Portland police for three years.

He was hired to fill a position left vacant when officer Chad Ridenour resigned on Dec. 31.

Bullard is a 2002 graduate of Indiana Business College in Muncie and he graduated from Jay County High School in 1989. He has one daughter, Sierra, age 7.

Portland Police Chief Bob Sours said Bullard will begin working for the police department in early March. In May, he will have to go to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy for 16 weeks of training.

In other business, the board voted this morning to table the renewal of the Waste Management contract until the board could meet with the company’s officials and work out some issues concerning recycling pick up.

Portland Mayor Bruce Hosier said the board has tried since January’s board of works meeting to set up a meeting with WM. A meeting has been scheduled for Friday morning.

Hosier said the board is concerned because the company is using smaller trucks to collect recycling than WM had originally told the city it would use. The smaller trucks hold less, and collection is slower than with the larger trucks, he said.

Also today, the board accepted a $5,806 bid from Fisher Scientific Company LLC of Hanover Park, Ill. for a new biochemical oxygen demand incubator for the wastewater treatment plant.

Portland Wastewater Treatment Plant superintendent Bob Brelsford said the plant’s current incubator is 25 years old, and he is no longer able to purchase new parts for it.

Samples of wastewater are put in a bottle with a mixture of nutrients to test how much oxygen microorganisms are taking in. They are then placed in the incubator for five days.

Spectrum Laboratory Products Inc. of New Brunswick, N.J. also submitted a bid for $6,596. The Fisher bid was selected by the board because it was the lower bid and because the incubator was larger than the one Spectrum offered.[[In-content Ad]]
