Businesses should make smoking choice (07/23/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I would like to thank the Jay County Commissioners for allowing the people of Jay County to voice our opinions on the proposed public smoking ban for Jay County.

The majority of the people spoke against the ban. So let us take a look at what is "public." Public - of or for all people. To me this includes all publicly-owned businesses - including hospitals, jails, the courthouse, license branch and other places that conduct public business that cannot be done anywhere else.

Let us look at what is "private." Private - belonging to a specific person or group.

That is every other business. A business owner of a "privately owned" business should be allowed the right to choose how that business is run. Please do not step on our rights.

A non-smoker has the right to open any business they choose and run it how they choose.

If you want a non-smoking atmosphere, put your money where others put a cigarette and open a non-smoking business of your choosing. Let the rest of us alone.

By the way, I am a non-smoker.

Susan Bloom

Thanks

To the Editor:

We would like to take this opportunity to say that the staff members of Persimmon Ridge Nursing Facility (formerly AmeriCare Living Center), were tremendously helpful and very attentive to not only our mothers' needs but also ours as well. Their professionalism and caring made a difficult situation much more tolerable.

They were very attentive and helpful and that was much appreciated by everyone in our family. The jobs that they have are not easy and usually are very thankless.

We as a family would like to say thank you for everything.

It made our mother's difficult illness a little easier on everyone involved.
