Byrum ends year after series victory (06/07/03)


It was quite a season for Pete Byrum.

Byrum, a 2000 graduate of Jay County High School, gave the Indiana Tech Warriors their final win of the season Monday, May 26 as he pitched them to a 12-7 victory over Ohio Dominican in the NAIA World Series. No. 9 Tech dropped out in the next round of the double-elimination tournament with a 7-6 defeat at the hands of fifth-seeded Bellevue (Nebraska).

Byrum allowed six runs on 11 hits in 61/3 innings against Ohio Dominican. He struck out six and walked three in the victory.

He also won the third and final game of the NAIA Super Regional series for the Warriors to earn them their spot in the World Series.

The junior finish the year at 7-2 with a 4.66 ERA. He struck out 39 batters and walked just eight in 56 innings.

He also had one complete game and one save.

McClung ends at regional

Jay County graduate Kerri McClung finished her season Sunday at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

McClung, a 2000 graduate of JCHS, competed in the shot put and finished 23rd. She had her third best effort of the year in the event with a throw of 46 feet, six inches.

Jay golfers place 4th

The Jay County golf team took fourth in the Delaware Invitational at the Delaware Country Club Friday.

Delta placed first with 315, led by medalist Brad Harris with a 75. Jay County’s team score was 348.

For Jay County, Tyler Johnston shot an 82, Ben Freeman an 85, Adam Foster an 86, Alex Hunt a 95, and Jesse Shawver a 98.

Yorktown was second in the meet, with Anderson Highland third.

East Jay wins

East Jay powered to another win Thursday, rolling over Union City 12-3.

Joshua Ludy struck out seven in five innings and singled twice.

Derek Mills also had two singles, while Casey Waters and Kaleb Carpenter each had doubles.

Justin Mann came in for relief, pitching two innings and striking out three while giving up just one hit.

East Jay jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the first inning and three more in the second.

Union City rallied in the third to put three runs on the board.

BSU baseball camp

Ball State University’s summer baseball camp is set for June 16 to 19 and June 23 to 26 on the BSU campus in Muncie.

A hitting camp for baseball players from age 8 to twelfth grade is set for June 16 and 17. A pitching and catching camp for the same age levels is set for June 18 and 19. Both camps run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. The cost is $85 for one camp or $150 for both.

A day camp covering all aspects of baseball is set for June 23 to 26 and is open to baseball players age 8 to 15. The day camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The day camp cost is $200 which includes lunch daily. All camps participants also receive a T-shirt.

Golf outing

A golf outing to benefit Jay County Special Olympics will be held Sept. 27, hosted by the Jay County Knights of Columbus at the Portland Country Club.

The four-person scramble has a team fee of $200, which includes green fees, cart rental, lunch and prizes.

Football tryouts

Semi-pro football has arrived in Jay and Mercer counties.

The newly formed Jay-Mercer Cougars will play in the CrossRoads Football League, which includes teams from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. The team will play game on Saturday afternoons beginning July 26, with home games at Fort Recovery High School.

Tryouts for the team are today at Ambassador Park in Fort Recovery at 11 a.m. Anyone ages 18-or-older who is interested in playing is invited to attend.

Sports banquet

The Jay County High School spring sports banquet will be Thursday, June 12 at 6 p.m. in the JCHS commons.

Baseball and softball players are asked to bring casseroles and side dishes, track athletes are asked to bring desserts, and tennis players and golfers should bring salads.
