BZA OKs shop in Portland (09/12/07)
Portland Board of Zoning Appeals
By By RACHELLE HAUGHN-
A Portland man will have a place to whittle wood.
Members of a local board granted a special exception Tuesday which will allow the man to build a woodworking shop on the east side of Portland.
Donald Sutton asked the Portland Board of Zoning Appeals to grant him a special exception to build the structure on a lot zoned neighborhood business.
He told board members that he will not be selling anything. The 20-foot x 40-foot building will be constructed on a lot located at the southwest corner of Votaw and Pierce streets.
The building planned by Sutton, a resident of 715 E. Main St., will be located on the south end of the lot near an east-west alley.
The lot is owned by Brian Hurt, who plans to construct a parking area at the site for a daycare business on the southeast corner of the intersection.
Because the type of building and use Sutton is requesting is not specifically listed in the city's zoning ordinance, it was filed as a special exception as an industrial wood shop, which is a permitted exception in an area zoned neighborhood business.
Board member Larry Petro asked Bill Milligan, Jay/Portland Building and Planning administrator, if he has received any complaints about the request from neighboring property owners.
Milligan said one neighbor approved of the request, and there were no complaints. No one in the audience Tuesday commented on the request.
"I really don't see a problem with it," Petro said before voting in favor of the special exception request.
Board members Ken Walters and Vicki Tague also voted in favor of the request. Ron May and Susan Schutz, also board members, did not attend Tuesday's meeting.[[In-content Ad]]
