BZA OK's store plans (8/19/05)
Man to operate general store in Pike Township
By By Mike Snyder-
A request to operate a store offering t-shirts, novelties and other general-use items at a Pike Township home met no opposition from a county zoning board.
Members of the Jay County Board of Zoning Appeals approved a special exception Thursday sought by Paul Saunders, who will operate the store from his home on the southwest corner of county roads 400 South and 300 East.
Saunders told the three members of the BZA present at Thursday afternoon’s meeting that he travels the country to festivals and events to sell a variety of items — including shirts, toys and other novelties. He purchases those items in large quantities, and he said he would like a way to sell some items while he is at home.
“It’s not a full-time thing ... There is no store in Salamonia anymore, and I’ve actually had people ask me to start a store,” Saunders told BZA members Dennis Rodgers, Carl Walker and Steve Fennig. “When I’m home, I’ll throw the doors open. If I’m gone for a month, they’ll be closed.”
In addition to the merchandise he normally offers, Saunders said he plans to stock “items people use everyday.”
Bill Milligan, director of Jay/Portland Building and Planning Department, said that notices of Saunders’ request had been sent to nearby property owners and that no objections had been expressed.
Saunders’ home, located at 4030 South 300 East, is the site of a former school. He said Thursday that the actual store area will be about 20-feet by 15-feet.
The lot, which is also owned by Charlene Peake, is approximately 1.25 acres.[[In-content Ad]]
