Camp sponsors thanked (8/17/04)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

On Saturday, June 26, 32 campers from Jay County finished up a week’s stay at the Karl E. Kelly Memorial Youth Camp, which is put on by Indiana Conservation Officers and volunteers throughout the state.

During this week these campers went through the Indiana hunter education program, the Indiana boater education program and spent a day on the shooting range shooting more than 18,000 rounds of ammunition.

The camp would not have been complete if they didn’t get to go canoeing, or camping in a pup tent fixing their own wild game meals over a fire.

Another day of enjoyment was also found on Raccoon Lake riding the air boat, wave runners, learning to canoe and finishing with volunteers from the local BASS chapter.

Another enjoyable time at the camp was the marching to the meals and the push-ups that were done for any number of reasons. Well, I don’t know how enjoyable those last two were, but they will be memories that were part of the camp.

I would like to take this time to thank individuals and business sponsors who helped the young campers to have these memories and the opportunity to attend this camp. Without these sponsors several may have not been able to attend.

These sponsors were: The Tire Center, Williamson & Spencer Funeral Home, J&P Custom Plating Inc., Portland True Value Hardware, Bryant Combine Parts, Jay County 4-H, Whitenack Farms, Dr. Herman and Debbie Burgermeister, Kerry and Mary Gerber, Casey and Marla Lutes, West Jay Optimist Club and Qualtech Tool & Engineering Inc.

Also, Portland Breakfast Optimist Club, Moser Engineering, Randy and Libby Noles, Fuqua Chrysler Plymouth, Robert and Harriett Weekley, Bixler Insurance, Limberlost Coon Hunters club, Loblolly Gun Shop, Portland Tire & Service, Wheat’s Transmission Repair, Young Builders Construction, Kiwanis Club of Portland, Portland Lions Club, Ja-mar TV & Appliance, Jay County Conservation Club, Dr. Stephen and Connie Myron, Jay County Landfill and Jay County Community Corrections.

I would also like to thank Jack Wood and Peyton’s of Bluffton for donating disposable cameras for all of the campers at the camp.

Again, I would like to say thank you to these sponsors for not only allowing one camper to enjoy the Karl E. Kelly Memorial Camp, but all 32.
