Cancer society thanks supporters (12/06/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

The holidays always give us the opportunity to reflect on the things we are thankful for in our lives. The Jay County Cancer Society is thankful for our successful fundraising this year that allows us to provide financial support to cancer patients in Jay County. We are thankful for our board members volunteers, patients, businesses and anyone else who helped this year.

We had events that we supported. The Walk Against Cancer raised more than $20,000 in the driving rain - our best year ever. Thanks to all of the groups that held events to benefit the cancer society: The mayor's golf outing, sorority bingo events, a volleyball tournament, a senior project at Jay County High School, Pizza Hut buffet night, our United Way support, purple potty at local parades, and memorials.

The cancer society regrets not hosting the holiday auction this year. Please look for the event in 2008, and mark your calendars for the Walk Against Cancer on June 21, 2008 at the Jay County High School track.

All these funds provide financial support to patients in Jay County. So far this year we have helped more than 55 patients pay for their treatments, medication, medical tests, and other non-insured expenses related to their cancer diagnosis.

Annual financial assistance begins at $1,000 for a first-year patient, decreases to $700 for a second year patient, and then remains at $500 for each year thereafter. These amounts may change at the discretion of the board of directors based on the amount of funds raised annually. Although it may not make the treatments easier or the diagnosis better, it does ease some of the financial burden at a very difficult time.

The cancer society looks forward to the day when our help is not necessary because cancer no longer exists.

Until that day comes, know that we are here and working very hard to help our friends and neighbors in Jay County.

On behalf of cancer patients in Jay County, the Jay County Cancer Society Board of Directors, our volunteers and our donors, please have a safe and happy Christmas season.

Thank you for another successful year.

Vice president,

Respect

To the editor:

My family and I would like to thank the coaches of the girls and boys swim teams at Jay County High School for bringing both teams to show their respect at the calling for my father (James Straley).

I have known most of these young women and men all their lives. They have grown up to be the most respectful, caring and intelligent young people Jay County has to offer.

I love and thank each and every one of them.

Alice Imel and family
