Cancer WALK is June 23

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
In the next few weeks Jay County residents will find 2012 WALK Against Cancer advertisements in their newspapers. We are celebrating the 11th anniversary of this event.
It is our hope that the community will join us on Saturday, June 23 at the Jay County High School track to raise money for the Jay County Cancer Society. The cancer society provides financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County for medical expenses, travel, prescriptions, testing, etc.
Activities start with a survivor dinner at 6 p.m. (reservations required by June 4), vendor area, kids’ area and concessions (all from 7-9 p.m.), opening ceremonies with balloon launch at 8:30 p.m. and the luminary ceremony at 9:30 p.m. This year, many donated items will be raffled off at 9 p.m.
The event will be held at the JCHS track, rain or shine. Bring a jacket, umbrella (just in case) and lawn chairs.
Fliers for the event are available at the Jay County Public Library, Jay County Hospital, Jay Community Center, and at many county businesses. The flier is also available online at jaycountychamber.com.
The flier will have the times for all events and a pledge sheet on the back. Walkers who collect pledges totaling more than $100 will receive a free WALK t-shirt while supplies last.

Thank you to our 2012 Platinum sponsors: Delta Theta Tau, Xi, and Dr. Charles Miller. Also to our Gold Sponsors: Altar Rosary Society, Family Worship Center, Dr. David Fullenkamp, Fellowship Baptist Church, Hartzell Fan Inc., Inman U-Loc, Jay County Hospital, Knights of Columbus, MainSource Bank, Mayor Geesaman’s 2012 Golf Outing, Remember When (the VanSkyock family), SDP Manufacturing, Stoneridge, Arch Bridge Kroozers, Pak-A-Sak, Verallia (St. Gobain), New Beginnings Holiness Church, Jay County Hospital Medical Practices, Schmit Chiropractic, Blacksmith Union Local 1620 and Williams Auto Parts.
How can you help?
There are many ways. You can collect money from your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, etc. as pledges or for luminaries and keep track on the pledge sheet, then bring the pledge sheet and money to the WALK. Ask your employer to make a donation on your behalf. Help spread the word by sharing this information with as many people as possible. Display the flier in your place of business. Have a charity fundraiser at your place of employment, church or philanthropic group and donate the funds raised to the WALK Against Cancer. The ways to help are endless and the difference every dollar makes is priceless.
Remember that 100 percent of the money donated to the Jay County Cancer Society remains in Jay County helping our neighbors and friends with their uninsured cancer related expenses. In 2011, more than 80 Jay County cancer patients were helped financially.
If you would like to volunteer at the WALK or need additional information, please contact us at (260) 726-8110 and leave a message.
Donations are accepted the night of the WALK or anytime at P.O. Box 614, Portland, IN, 47371.
We look forward to seeing you on June 23 as we remember those lost, honor those suffering and celebrate those who have won the fight against cancer.
Bev Inman and Linda Leonhard, co-chairs, 2012 WALK Against Cancer
