Cancer walk organizer says thank you (06/28/07)
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
We prayed for rain for Jay County and we got it. We also prayed for a successful Walk to raise money for cancer patients in Jay County and we got that too.
The weather forced us to make many changes to the evenings events, but it did not adversely affect the generosity of our walkers. We have received over $18,000 and this puts on track to have our best year ever. The funds raised are used to provide financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County with costs related to their disease.
The evening started with car show enthusiasts who brought out their beloved restored cars in the inclement weather. The cancer survivors and their families enjoyed the fellowship during the Celebration of Life Dinner. The kids area was a hit - kids love to get wet and splash around in the water. Over 800 luminaries were sold in honor and memory of people who have battled the disease. We even managed to keep some of the candles dry and light them during the luminary ceremony. It was awesome to feel the serenity of the rainfall and to walk on the candle-lit track as names were read.
The Jay County Cancer Society has many dedicated and unselfish volunteers, people who volunteer hundreds of hours of their own time to help people afflicted with cancer. We are not a business - just a group of volunteers who remembered Saturday night we are raising money for cancer patients and then braved the weather to do it.
A great big thank you to all involved in the Walk - the volunteers, the sponsors, the walkers, and most importantly, the people we know and love who are afflicted with the disease.
The Walk, rain or shine, is about celebrating cancer patients, hope, and survival.
Donations are still being accepted at: Walk Against Cancer, PO Box 614, Portland, Indiana 47371 or call 260-726-8110 and leave a message for the Walk committee.
Thank You Jay County,
Carolyn Carducci, chairman,
Walk Against Cancer
Why?
To the editor:
After reading the article about hiring a new assistant principal at East Jay Middle School, I see the hiring of an outsider as another reason why people from this community are going elsewhere to find employment. I am sure there were some qualified persons from right here in Jay County that would love to have that job. The next time one of our top-notch grads looks somewhere else, just look back at this example and you will know why.
